Greek wine is not only about taste.
It is about landscape, myth, and centuries of tradition.
With this philosophy, GW – The Greek Wine Routes introduces Stories & Grapes, a narrative podcast series dedicated to Greece’s indigenous grape varieties and the regions that shape them.
The journey begins with Agiorgitiko, one of Greece’s most celebrated red grapes and the signature variety of the historic wine region of Nemea in the Peloponnese.
Narrated by Achilleas, the first episode invites listeners to discover the story behind the grape — where wine, land, and mythology meet.
Agiorgitiko – A Wine with Character
Agiorgitiko is among the most important indigenous red grape varieties of Greece.
Known for its velvety texture, ripe red fruit aromas, and balanced structure, it produces wines that range from fresh and fruity to elegant and complex.
Its name means “the grape of Saint George”, a reference to the historic name of the town of Nemea, which was once called Agios Georgios.
Today, Agiorgitiko wines are produced primarily in the PDO Nemea wine region, one of the largest and most historic appellations in Greece.
Nemea – Where Myth Meets the Vineyard
The vineyards of Nemea stretch across rolling hills in the northeastern Peloponnese.
But the region is known not only for its wine.
According to Greek mythology, this is the land where Hercules defeated the Nemean Lion, completing the first of his legendary twelve labours.
Today, the vineyards that cover the valley continue a long tradition of winemaking that connects the ancient past with the modern Greek wine culture.
